Investment opportunities in the construction of solar power plants in Iran

With an average solar radiation of more than 2,200 kWh/m2 per year, Iran is considered one of the most suitable countries in the world for the development of solar energy. The vastness of the arid and semi-arid climate, the existence of unused land, and the increasing need for sustainable energy sources have created conditions that make the construction of solar power plants in the country not only environmentally but also economically justifiable.

In recent years, the increase in electricity consumption, especially in the hot months, and the pressure on the national grid have doubled the need to diversify energy sources. Solar power plants, with their short implementation time, low maintenance costs, and useful life of more than 20 years, are an attractive option for private investors. In addition, guaranteed power purchase agreements (PPAs) and government incentives have provided a suitable legal basis for the return on investment.

The Iranian market offers numerous opportunities not only for large-scale power plants above 10 MW, but also for medium and small-scale projects in industrial estates, agricultural units and even residential complexes. Combining solar systems with modern lithium batteries allows for the provision of sustainable electricity in remote areas and reduces the cost of fossil fuels. Also, the entry of knowledge-based companies and domestic panel and inverter manufacturers reduces equipment supply risks and creates domestic added value.

From a financial perspective, the payback period for solar projects in Iran is estimated to be between 4 and 7 years, depending on the capacity of the power plant and the installation area. This indicator is more attractive compared to many other industries, and given the increase in fossil fuel prices and electricity tariffs, this payback is expected to be faster. In addition, the possibility of exporting electricity to neighboring countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan has created new opportunities for market development and foreign exchange earnings.

Overall, the construction of solar power plants in Iran can be considered one of the most sustainable and promising areas of investment; an area that is in line with the goals of reducing pollution, increasing energy security, and economic growth of the country. Taking advantage of this opportunity will require careful planning, private sector participation, and stable government support policies.
